Purple Mattress Reviews

Purple is widely recognized as one of the most innovative, popular bedding companies on earth today, thanks in large part to the success of the Original Purple mattress. The Purple bed utilizes a patented material called Hyper-Elastic Polymer, which is unlike any other mattress material on the market—it’s not a memory foam, or any type of foam really. In this review, we’ll cover what exactly that material is, as well as firmness, and back, stomach, and side sleepers.

The big selling feature for Purple mattresses is its Purple Grid layer, which is incorporated into all of the company’s mattresses. The original Purple Mattress is a medium-firm mattress that will likely be most comfortable for back and stomach sleepers. Purple says that a lot of its side-sleeping customers prefer the Purple Hybrid Premier, which is a hybrid mattress that is softer and more comfortable for shoulders and hips. Purple says that its grid also provides good motion isolation, especially combined with the foam base layers.

The newest version of the original Purple Mattress uses reinforced edges to provide more support. For those who sleep close to the edge of the mattress, this will help prevent the feeling that you might roll out of bed. Because the polymer is formed into a grid structure, there are thousands of open channels for airflow that promote a cooler night’s sleep. The Purple Mattress is a medium-firm mattress and isn’t available in any other firmness levels.

All About Purple Mattresses

Created by brothers with more than 30 cushioning-related patents used by brands like Nike, Johnson & Johnson, and Dr. Scholl’s, Purple founders Tony and Terry Pearce invented a machine, the Mattress Max, that can produce a gridded cushioning mattress layer at a consumer-friendly price. In 2016, they introduced The Original Purple Mattress, and in fall 2019 the company upgraded its original product with added edge support and a soft, stretchy cover. The company also offers the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier, which are available with a 3- or 4-inch layer of polymer grid.

Purple’s mattresses are made of a “hyper-elastic polymer” in a grid configuration rather than memory foam. The polymer, consisting of recyclable, food-grade materials, absorbs and transfers pressure from the hips and shoulders, so you get cushioning and support where you need it regardless of your sleeping position.

Are Purple Mattresses Good?

Yes, the original Purple Mattress is good. It’s No. 11 on our list of Best Mattresses of 2020 (out of 23). Purple’s “hyper-elastic polymer” grid is said to provide greater airflow and pressure point relief than traditional memory foam mattresses, providing a cooler sleep and better support. And the updated version promises better edge support so you don’t feel like you’re going to roll out of bed if you sleep near the edge.

The Purple Mattress

The original Purple Mattress is a medium-firm mattress constructed from Purple’s hyper-elastic polymer grid that doesn’t trap heat like traditional memory foam mattresses. The mattress includes more than 2,500 open-air channels to dissipate body heat. The polymer grid comfort layer also cradles the body and prevents motion transfer, which is good news for those with restless bed partners. In addition, the grid transfers pressure evenly to accommodate the body’s natural curves without that “I’m stuck” feeling common to memory foam.

The high-density, dual-layer polyurethane base is CertiPUR-US certified, which means it doesn’t contain specific chemicals. The Purple Mattress was recently upgraded to include enhanced edge support and a soft knit cover, which is a blend of viscose, polyester, and lycra with a non-slip bottom. It costs $1,099 for a queen.

Purple Hybrid Mattress

The Purple Hybrid includes a 2-inch layer of Purple Grid and a supportive base of responsive, fabric-encased coils for a slightly firmer feel than The Purple Mattress. Its StretchMax cover includes breathable side panels, and the overall grid-and-coil construction promotes airflow. It costs $1,599 for a queen.

Purple Hybrid Premier Mattress

This enhanced hybrid includes 3 or 4 inches of Purple Grid to cradle the body, promote proper alignment, prevent motion transfer, and encourage airflow. The Purple Hybrid Premier has a plush feel because of the additional polymer material and fabric-encased coils that serve as a responsive base. It starts at $2,199 for a queen.

How to Return a Purple Mattress

Purple Trial Period: 100-night sleep trial

Purple offers a standard 100-night risk-free sleep trial if you purchase directly from the company online. If you decide Purple isn’t for you, call the company’s customer service to arrange a pickup and a full refund. However, Purple asks that you give its mattresses 30 nights before initiating a return or exchange.

If you do return or exchange a Purple mattress, the company doesn’t expect you to fit the mattress back into its shipping tube. Instead, Purple will coordinate a pickup from a local donation center at no cost to you.

If you purchase a Purple mattress at a retailer like Macy’s or online at Amazon, the return process can be different and sleep trials vary. If you want the company’s “no pressure” sleep trial and a guaranteed free return, a direct purchase from Purple online is the best way to go.

How to Clean a Purple Mattress

To clean spills or manage stains on the mattress cover, spot-clean it with a mild detergent or upholstery cleaner. The cover isn’t machine-washable, although it does zip off. Machine-washing a Purple mattress cover could compromise the spandex material and cause it to lose its stretchy-soft feeling.

To help care for the mattress itself, Purple recommends airing it out on occasion. Also, regularly vacuum your mattress to help remove dirt and allergens. Sprinkle some baking soda on the mattress, let sit for several hours, and then vacuum. Purple also suggests letting your mattress sit out in the sun so the UV light will kill any bacteria or mold. This will also help remove odors and excess moisture.

To clean the mattress:

  1. Clean spills right away.
  2. Blot up excess moisture with a clean cloth.
  3. Spray a cleaner onto a dry cloth and dab the affected area.
  4. Don’t scrub the area. This will cause the stain to penetrate further.
  5. Allow the mattress to air dry.
